Spain Officially the Best in the World

After their Euro 08 victory, Spain have moved from number 4 to number 1 in the new FIFA world rankings.

Spain is the 6th different team to hold the number one spot since 1993, when FIFA first starting using the ranking system.

This is the first time that Spain has ever been ranked number one.

The top five is:
1. Spain
2. Italy
3. Germany
4. Brazil
5. Netherlands

The former number 1, Argentina dropped 5 spots to number 6, and this current ranking is the first time that Brazil has been out of the top 3.

The United States dropped down to number 30 in the rankings, 9 spots lower then they were previously.

I think Argentina moving down that far is fair, as they have been unable to beat both the United States, and Brazil, with the combined scores of those games being 0-0.

Does Spain Deserve to be Number 1?

I can understand the Netherlands moving up. They beat both Italy and France, both of whom were ranked very high in the previous rankings.

The one I don't understand is Italy. What did Italy show during the Euro's that made FIFA voters think that they actually have improved since the 06 World Cup.

I think everyone will agree that the Italy side we saw in the Euro's looked much worse then the side we saw in the 06 World Cup.

If anything Germany should have moved up to 2.

What about Holland above Italy? Would that be more accurate?
