Euro 08 Day 1 Wrapup

Group A was in action on the first day of the Euro 08 tournament.

Czech Republic defeat Switzerland 1-0

In the co-hosts opening game, Switzerland not only lost the game, but they lost their captain and best player Alexander Frei to injury.

Switzerland dominated the play for most of the game, and Vaclav Sverkos's goal in the 70th minute appeared to be offsides.

This is not the way Switzerland wanted to open up the tournament, and the Czech Republic in my opinion were lucky to win this game.

Portugal Cruise to a 2-0 win over Turkey

All the talk going into this game was about the Cristiano Ronaldo show that was coming to town.

However, it was the bench and depth of the Portugal side the propelled them to victory.

Second half goals were scored by substitute Pepe in the 60th minute, and Raul Meireles in extra time.

Ronaldo did play well and had a great free kick saved by the Turkish goalie.

Portugal showed why they are the favorites to win group A.

Did you see any of the games today? I saw the first one on ESPN. The Portugal-Turkey one was much more exciting. Crossbars/ woodwork, close free kicks by Ronaldo and Simao, 1 goal by Pepe ruled as offside, the goal celebration of Pepe, hoping the many goal chances would actually become goals.

Portugal won but how strong was the opponent Turkey? I think the true test will be against the 12th man and Switzerland, and confident Czech Republic.
